Hmm.  Ignore it.  That's what I would do.  It does not seem as if anything 
you're running depends on that service, and you intend on rebuilding the box 
soon anyways.  To top it off, it looks like you'd have to downgrade to a 2.4.7 
kernel image to fix the problem, which would undo the benefits of upgrading 
your kernel in the first place.

As I've spent more time dealing with larger networks, I've become very miserly 
with my time and do an immediate triage on problems like this.  This particular 
problem doesn't make the grade as far as dedicating any significant amount of 
time since whatever you do to fix it will be irrelevant after the OS upgrade 
you already have planned.  So unless it is really driving you crazy, or the 
problem impacts something important that you haven't mentioned, don't waste 
time on it.  That time is better spent backing up config files, /home, and 
other chores that will help make sure your SuSE 9 upgrade goes smoothly.
