That would be very cool Myron. I won't be around next month, but I do have
some interest in the subject. This is way above my ability, but my goal is to
write a driver for a NIC.

I've got a handful of Racore multi-personality NICs. (9348? I can't remember
the designation and they're boxed up right now.) These use a TI Thunderlan
chip to drive the 10/100 interface, and a swappable module you can pull out to
give the card either an ethernet RJ-45 interface or a fiber optic ST interface.
The cards are supported in FreeBSD & various Linux distributions when you're
using the ethernet module. All the ones I have have the fiber module. The
thunderlan module loads, but then is unable to take advantage of the card.

I don't have any hardware info about the module, but I've been able to google
for the various controller chips. Apparently the one that controls the light
signals is a fairly well known HP unit (more google hits for the HP chip than
for the entire Racore card).

Anyway, something to kick around for a while.

Cheers,

James
