I wish I could help you but I've also tried to compile my own mysql and 
failed.  I was to lazy to find the rh 7.2 rpms for my system and I 
believe I ran into compile issues.  You mentioned that you couldn't get 
the suse binaries of mysql to work with apache?  I assume you also 
installed suse's binaries for apache php/mysql mod?  At least that's 
what redhat needs to be done.

On the other hand, I'll be interested in what you think about slashcode.
I've installed and tested postnuke,phpnuke,geeklog and xoops.
