My first contribution to your list.  I have been reading your 
conversations for several months.
I am not familiar with xmms.  Maybe you have looked this up, but 
double-check file type associations in Firefox.  (Under 
Options/Downloads) You may have to manually set it up.  I had similar 
difficulties with other applications in Firefox.  Checkout the Mozilla 
site for any unpublished "features".  I had to add a code snippet to the 
pref.js file to get it to do something as simple as cut and pasting from 
the clipboard.  A future version of Mozilla apparently includes 
retrictions to the clipboard.
