I decided to try Ubuntu 9.10 on the kid's computer which already had 2
windows partitions and at least 4 linux partitions. Well, GRUB 2 got
me. After installing, it became the only partition that would now
boot. Been here before and know what to do, right? Wrong! I go get
the grub.conf file from its last home to copy and there is no conf file
for GRUB 2. If you are like me and hadn't run into this yet, GRUB 2
generates its parameters only from templates and scripts. Given that it
found all my bootable partitions, but failed to make them bootable, my
confidence is low. I'll experiment with it later, So chroot, and
re-install the old GRUB , and mock up a Ubuntu menu entry. Success, we
can boot to Ubuntu or the other OS's.

Next Problem: UID ranges are 500 and up on Fedora, Mandriva and other
distributions I've used on my home network, but being Debian based,
Ubuntu starts assigning them at 1000 and up. Modifying the
adduser.conf fixed the basic system, but the login screen doesn't
recognize UIDs below 1000, and so user names are not listed. Likewise,
the Users/Groups admin tool fails to see my users. These are not big
issues, but can these programs be tweaked? I thought of converting all
the users' UIDs & GIDs , but there are an awful lot of files already
stamped with the existing UID/GID. Anyone else fought this one?
