Hah!  I should read more carefully before I tell you to go to rpmfind.  :)

I looked through RedHat's ftp sites (updates. and ftp.) and could not find
anything higher than 2.96-85.  However here is part of the controversy
regarding 2.96 and 2.97:

"Please note that both GCC 2.96 and 2.97 are development versions; we
do not recommend using them for production purposes.  Binaries built
using any version of GCC 2.96 or 2.97 will not be portable to systems
based on one of our regular releases."

That's a quote from the people at gcc.gnu.org.  Going to their site, they
also jump from 2.95 to 3.0 - understandable given the quote above.  I
thought I saw a RedHat 2.97 rpm from somewhere - I'll dig through my archive
of update rpms that I have.  Perhaps I still have it if it's been withdrawn
for some reason.  Of course, I could be imagining it to begin with...
