I've been making backup images of some large partitions.  Here is a 
simple trick to monitor and estimate the remaining time on big dd copies 
using "pv" (pipe view), a command line progress indicator of data 
through a pipe.  For example,

instead of:   dd if=/dev/sda1 of=/media/backup_drive/sda1_WinVista_ntfs.img
use:

pv /dev/sda1 | dd of=/media/backup_drive/sda1_WinVista_ntfs.img

pv is not new, but still useful.
