Hi, all.

It has been a while since I have posted anything here. Actually, I think
everyone has been busy on other things since there hasn't been much
activity on this list.

Anyway, I just upgraded my desktop system. I had looked at buying one of
the Dell n-series systems as they come without a preinstalled os, but
after looking at the motherboard specs, I decided to upgrade my current
system. I ended up with an MSI K9N4 AM2 SLI motherboard with an Athlon
64 x2 4200+ processor and 2 gb of Corsair DDR2 800 ram. Since you can't
(afaik) get a motherboard these days for this processor with an AGP
slot, I had to get a new video card. Also had to get a new power supply.
I bought this particular motherboard because of the good reviews, and
the fact that it had two ide connectors for my current hd's and optical
drives. Most of the motherboards I looked at only had one ide connector.
I will be getting a SATA drive when I upgrade to FC7. It only has two
pci slots, but since it has on-board ethernet and sound, I only needed
one for my firewire card (no firewire on the motherboard.)

After installing all the bits and pieces, the system booted right up,
adjusting on the fly for the new ethernet and sound. Really works
smoothly. I have been building an FC6 rpm for the QGIS project. With the
old Athlon XP 1600+ with 1.5 gb of ram, it took over an hour to compile
and package. Now it only takes 23 mins. I was building a dvd slideshow
when I fired up Google Earth and navigated to a few bookmarked areas
around the globe. Not a single studder or stumble...smooth as silk! Very
happy with this upgrade. I should have gotten a dual-core system long ago...

Now that I have bored you with this: James, I cleaned up my desk and
found a cd that I burned for you that has the USGS quads of the Juneau
area. Do you still need them?

That's all, folks!

Chuck
