[juneau-lug] Update Stuff

Just to give people something to read, my latest project has been
installing and configuring X on a Sharp PC-8700 laptop (486 DX2/50,
24MB RAM, 240MB HDD). A basic X windows install of Debian 2.2 takes
about 160MB, but most everything works. I did the 'simple' install
(with the Debian Tasks instead of picking packages individually) so
I'm sure that I can get that install down quite a bit. For example,
Debian installed AfterStep, TWM, WindowMaker *and* Enlightenment. I
still need to get sound up and running, and tweak X a little.

Stuff still here - the HP Vectra XU 5/90 is still here, waiting for a
CD/Hard drive and possibly a second Pentium 90. This would be a very
nice dual processor network server! I've tested both Linux (Debian)
and OpenBSD on this machine, they'll both install as long as you don't
put a SIMM in slot 5 or 6. But slots 1-4 and 7-8 work fine. Both the
onboard IDE and onboard SCSI controllers work, and the onboard
ethernet works as well. As I type this, I realize that I haven 't
tested it with the onboard ethernet and a regular ethernet card in it
for a cable modem firewall/router configuration. Should be no
problems. I also borrowed a 16MB SIMM from it to beef up the memory
of a Quadra 630 thatI'm playing with, but that can comeback out again
pretty quickly.

My intention was to put OpenBSD on the Quadra, but it might have to
settle for NetBSD instead. I haven't tested it, but from the
documentation it appears that OpenBSD only likes the SCSI Macs, while
the Quadra 630 uses ATA drives. NetBSD isn't as picky. Anyway, the
nice folks at Apple are giving away System 7.5.3 as a free download,
and the 7.5.5 upgrade as a free download as well. So if you find an
older Mac without an operating system, I can help you at least get
7.5.5 installed and running on it. 7.5.3 only needs a 25MB partition,
so the rest of the disk can go to Linux or BSD. I'm still learning
the ins and outs of *nix on a Mac, so we'd both be feeling about in
the dark.

If anyone has any artwork for the Juneau-LUG logo, please let me know.
Also, if anyone wants to help Jim out with the web page, get in touch
with him. Sounds like he's been fairly busy lately. If we can
pre-generate the HTML for him to upload, we can keep the web page up
to date without requiring a lot of work on his part. I'll start
creating some tech pages (like the Sharp PC-8700 install) to put
on our page. I started that particular project after getting an
e-mail request for help, so people are still looking for that sort of
information. Maybe I'll do a page on installing BSD on the Quadra.

Right now I'm assuming that the next meeting is the last Saturday of
July, at my house again. 6pm. Let me know if you can't make it. If
the weather is nice, we'll fire up the barbeque. The "admin" meeting
for the middle of the month looks like it is suffering from lack of
interest. Maybe in August we'll get organized?

James
