Since I don't know their true motives, I really can't speak to their
altruism, but I believe the Gates Foundation does a lot of good.  I think
anytime someone engages in philanthopic activities it's good.  Whether their
doing it out of a real desire to help their fellow man, guilt, good PR or
what I can't say.  But the effect is good.

I do distinguish unfettered charitable giving from the corporate "giving"
that MS sometimes engages in where they "donate" some large amount in the
form of software, which of course, locks the users (a poor school district
or 3rd world country) into licensing hassles down the road.  That's just a
scam come-on as far as I'm concerned...
