State surplus today was pretty busy at 8:30. There are some Pentium II
computers there - two Gateway E3100 tower units were popular & were picked
up and inspected several times while I was there (8:30 - 9:00). However
they were PII 233/64MB RAM and put back on the shelf after a bit. There are
also some Gateway E3100 and E3000 units that are not being picked up,
presumably because they are smaller & don't look so big & powerful.

The gems are a bunch of IBM PC-300XL computers. The one I inspected was a
PII 266, 96MB RAM, 4GB IDE HDD, 16x CD. These are mixed in with the IBM
PC-350 computers, which are P166 machines. Because they don't all have a
Pentium II sticker on the front, people are assuming that they're older
than the 350s.

If you're not looking for a new computer, there is a stack of ISA NICs on
the parts table. These are about evenly divided between Alta Research
ETC-16 and ETC-16+ models. DO NOT BUY THE ETC-16s! The ETC-16 does not
have any jumpers, and I have not found any DOS configuration utility for
these things. I have one of these ETC-16 models and have not gotten any
Linux or BSD to work with them. (They work with Windows drivers, but I've
never been able to configure one in Windows and have that same configuration
work with *nix.) The ETC-16+ units on the other hand, work great. They are
jumperable, and there is a jumper map silk screened on the card itself so
you know how to set it up. They use the NE2000 module for whatever OS
you're running. There are also some IBM Ethernet NICs in there as well as
some other brands such as SMC, and a couple of IBM Token Ring NICs.

There is an IBM Network Printer 17, with toner cartridge. I didn't have
time to run a test page. The 17" monitor collection is growing, with a lot
of newer monitors showing up (these are clean, without the color-faded
plastic or scratched screens). The 3 OkiData 6e printers have been reduced
to $5 from $20. These are LED printers, not laser printers, but the output
is laser quality. (The 6e means 6 pages per minute.)

If you get down there today I'd bet that some of the PC-300XLs will still be
there, as they have pretty good camouflage stacked in amongst the PC-350s.

Cheers,

James
