Thanks, James,

It looks as if it were mostly me.  The drives seem to be OK, I just had 
to look in the utilities folder to find the ``hard drive tool kit''. 
 It's been claiming to be formatting for an hour, and I think I'll pull 
the plug and start over.  It seems hung.

I'll check out that netbsd link, thanks.
