Hmm, my FC2 test 2 box doesn't have USB ports.
However, we've got a Cruzer that works fine with Debian 2.4.25.

I suppose it might be a kernel issue, but I'd be surprised - the Cruzer shows 
up on my system as just a USB mass storage device, which has been supported 
forever.  However I remember not being able to get my SanDisk SDR-55 smartmedia 
reader going unless I upgraded to 2.4.19...

Do you have anything like an automount daemon running on FC1 that you don't 
have running with Knoppix 3.4?
