Dan, try

mount -t smbfs //win98box/sharename -o user=win98user pass=win98password
/mnt/samba

The -t smbfs will mount an SMB share (Windows share) using the normal mount
command.

The -o user pass is completely optional. If you don't supply a username and
password with the -o (options), Samba will use the current username and will
prompt you for a password. This is nice if you've got your smbusers file
set up to map the different usernames correctly (or you just use the same
username for your Linux and Windows machines).

If you *do* supply these variables, you can use the mount command in a
script (or even fstab, but that's a bad idea since the password will be in
cleartext). A script readable only by root is handy as you just su to root
and run the script, which can mount one or a hundred Windows shares. Sudo
is very handy here. Note that if you issue the `su` command as a user, your
username is unchanged, so you can use su to mount the share without
supplying a user name. If you `su -` as a user, your username will become
root. (man su)

The /mnt/samba is of course the directory that you created to mount samba
shares in. I have a variety of folders that I have created - one for the
Zip drive on our Windows machine, one for the folder I have my web page in,
etc. etc.

If you're running Gnome, there are tools like Gnomba you can look at. I
didn't find them to be very useful compared to just mounting the shares, but
there are some pretty good tools for Gnome/KDE that mimic Windows' Network
Neighborhood.

Sorry I haven't been paying attention to the mailing list. I've been pretty
busy and haven't even read my mail for a while - yesterday I sorted through
about 800 messages. Ugh.

Cheers,

James Z.
