I'd second that about a discussion of command line tools.  The hardest
thing about the command line for a novice is remembering the names of
the commands.

Midnight Commander is a great tool for many operations involving the
file system.  I've been using it since 1997 or so.

Anybody out there use screen?  I've heard that it is great, but have
never tried it myself.
