Oddly enough, I *do* use the "telnet host 25" to test SMTP 
installations.  But I can't keep the syntax straight either; I use a 
cheat sheet.

I also use "telnet host 80" to test HTTPD installations, as well. 
Sometimes the raw connection provides diagnostics no other method can 
provide.
