How about mutt? It's MUA of choice for qmail systems and is very very
customizable.  It does have a bit of learning curve but last time I used
it I was impressed with the auto organizing folders as well as colors and
threads.  Although I think it's a bit like vi and vim, kinda cryptic
compared to e-macs but very quick and usable once you get used to it.
