James,
The problem seems to be Evolution specific.

I do have a usable password for this in CAPS, which must have been captured as
a parameter for Evolution during the install.  I did reset the password in
somewhere along the line to lower case.  That is my presently usable root
password.

The user login password, which can be changed via either GUI or terminal as you
suggested, has no effect on the Evolution use of keyring.  That [Evolution use]
remains the CAPS version set some time back.  It will not change!

My situation is workable with three passwords - login, Evolution keyring, and
root, but it would this be useful to set the login and Evolution keyring
password the same -- hopefully so my requests for passwords goes down.  Gnome
is always asking for passwords, like about every ten idle minutes.

But on the Evolution change, would this info from
http://live.gnome.org/Evolution/FAQ be usable?

"How can I reset my Master Password (NSS User Private Key)?

"shutdown evolution: $ evolution --force-shutdown. Then go to cd ~/.evolution,
move the files cert8.db, key3.db and secmod.db out of the directory (to
somewhere else e.g. a backup directory). Start evolution again and go to
edit->prefs->certificates->import. Now you can import an new S/Mime-certificate
and you will be prompted for a new Master Password."

Unless you advise otherwise, I will sometime attempt this -- to learn if
nothing else.

Lastly, how do I change the root password?  I believe I have done it in past in
Terminal, but can't recall how.  The infamous forums defintely confuse change
root and change login.

Larry
