Given the weather, I doubt anyone will read this until late tonight. :)
Happy Easter.

I've downloaded another Live CD distribution, "PCLinuxOS 2004" and can burn CDs
for anyone interested.

Unlike Knoppix & all of it's sundry specialized versions, this one is .rpm
based (using Mandrake), but it does have apt (and the synaptic X front end)

I tried it here, and it is well set up. It uses KDE, and should autodetect &
set up X for you. It had trouble with my machine, as I've got two video cards
which stumped it - but trying to figure out a complex hardware configuration is
a common problem with the live CD distros.

PCLinuxOS is intended for newer hardware, so it won't run on as many machines
as Knoppix will. I wouldn't run it on anything slower than 750MHz, and it
requires 256MB RAM. I'd recommend 1.5GHz/512MB based on my limited testing.

It does have a hard drive install, which I have not tested. If you do a hard
drive install, the minimums would revert to those needed by a normal Mandrake
install, as everything wouldn't be run from a ramdisk. I'll eventually find a
box to put this on, and test the upgrade process. Knoppix uses so many
specialized apt sources that I find it hard to keep a Knoppix hard drive
install up to date security wise - so I'm interested to see if PCLinuxOS is
able to use the normal Mandrake security update process.

Anyway, it's available. If you've got an extra box that you want to test the
hard drive install on, let me know and I'll get a CD to you.

Cheers,

James
