Probably the easiest way to do numbers like that would be to set up
options
on Tools -> Outline Numbering where there is no indentation between the
levels. Then you use tab & shift-tab to switch outline levels (tab will
move you one level down, 4.2 becomes 4.2.1, shift tab moves the other
way).
Since you don't have a "4.3" level, you'll probably have to play with the
settings to get it right.

I think they have trouble reverse-engineering some of the MS format stuff.
Take a look at the HS ILP document in OpenOffice to see what I'm talking
about. Of course it would be easier if they had access to the MS supplied
filters, but then it wouldn't be free...

We have Windows/Linux/Source CD's available here, to be distributed at the
next meeting. I'll mail you a master CD to make copies in Anchorage with.
(Since OpenOffice is GPL, it is best to include the source with it
although it's not absolutely necessary. It just has to be "available.")

Cheers,

James
