Well, it's a complicated issue. We certainly have to remember that the
meetings are a public forum, and that there are copyright laws that apply to
distribution of music. But I don't see any problem whatsoever with ripping
songs from a CD, putting them into mp3 or ogg format, and playing them that
way. The other formats are more useful - for example, I can cram 10+ audio
CDs onto one ogg CD. Then I can leave the ogg CD in the drive and listen to
any of the music on it whenever I chose to, instead of having to change CDs
all the time. This is known as "fair use." I move the music from one form
to another that is more convenient for me.

Currently the RIAA is trying their best to make that practice illegal, or at
least technically impossible. However until they succeed, I'm more than
willing to help show people how it's done. If you check the web page, the
music stuff is up there as a topic for October already. I use gnump3d to
stream audio on my home network, and I've toyed with live streams a little.
So we can go into how things are set up and done. If anyone has a favorite
encoding program or favorite player, please demo it at the meeting.

Cheers,

James
