Last night's meeting went a little slower than I had hoped, but I think we had a good time. Using my antiquated hardware, we managed to set up the basic network, get DHCP and Apache up and running, but the clock ran out on us before we could work out the bugs on the DNS server. Lesson learned - I had brought the machines in without the servers pre-installed. That was a mistake as we spent valuable time installing packages. We also had trouble with the CD-R discs not being read by older CD drives. This surprised me as all of those machines had their OS installed on the same Costco TDK CD-Rs! The difference between the CDs came to me after the meeting ended. I normally burn CDs with X-CDRoast (which uses cd-record) and a Yamaha CD-RW. The CD-Rs I brought in were burnt with Roxio EZ CDCreator 5 on Windows. I did this because I needed to burn 17 CDs, and the fastest burner I had available was on a Windows box. So there are two variables - the Dell DVD/CD-RW burner and Roxio. I'll play around with things and see what's up. Anyway, despite our troubles I think everyone had a good time. I'll try to make sure that whatever we do next time can actually be done in ~3 hours so we don't run out of time. What I would like for October are topic ideas. Anything that the group as a whole is interested in setting up is fair game, keeping in mind that my portable network is not really set up for X.
