[juneau-lug] Non-Linux firewall

This quarter's Daemon News has a good basic howto for OpenBSD's PF. I've
used IPF (a similar firewall that PF shares a lot of syntax with) and PF
for simple firewalls before, and found both to be relatively easy to work
with. PF can handle situations such as a cable modem with dynamic IP a
little better than IPF.

I'm planning on doing an iptables walk-through for the next meeting, and
just touch a little on PF if anyone is interested. However if anyone is
considering an OpenBSD 3.0 firewall I can go into more detail. There used
to be a great deal of difference between Linux and BSD firewalls, mainly
because IPF was stateful where ipchains was not. Now that iptables is
used more often for Linux firewalls, the differences have been reduced
quite a bit. For a home user, the only real difference is syntax (and
your familiarity with the underlying OS).

Also, I don't know anything at all about the FreeBSD firewall package
(IPFW) - if anyone uses it on a regular basis and would like to
demonstrate that would be great.
