It's a great idea and it has been done before check out community-colo
projects such as the seattle community colocation project:
http://www.seaccp.org/   or the california community colo at
http://www.communitycolo.net/, I wanted to colocate my box at one of those
places but they are strictly non-commercial non-profit and some of the
people I host have some commercial activities (I have some web people who
are friends who host their website and sell a few things) so... I had to do
my own.
