For CDs:

Hmm.  Judgement call.  I don't usually listen to audio CD's on my computer, so 
I'll pass on that one.  What I usually do is turn the CD into ogg files and 
listen to those with Amarok.  That way I don't have to constantly change CD's 
out.  (As long as you don't publish the ripped files, it is "fair use" and 
completely legal.)

For DVDs:

Larry, you can install libdvdcss without worrying about a passle of lawyers 
coming down on you.

Essentially nobody will sue you for watching movies you've purchased -- it's 
like ripping audio CD's for your own use. 

(Now if you use libdvdcss to rip dvd's, turn them into another format, and 
then redistribute them... well then you're taking your chances.  That was 
part of the rationale in the decss lawsuit, in that the utility helped 
pirates.)
