It's always hard to get a full time job description down on a page or two of
paper. This job has a fairly active helpdesk component, but also Windows
and Linux support in the mix, as well as networking. Good hardware skills
are also a very big plus; in other words, the job functions are sort of all
over the board. What we're really looking for in a nutshell is someone
w/broad overall skill and experience but in particular good Linux skills.
Most people that we've interviewed have decent Windows skills. Finding
someone that can hit the ground running on the Linux side is harder.
Our DNS servers & email gateways - both pretty much what one would term
"mission critical" - are on Linux. Having someone on board that can help
maintain or troubleshoot them is a must. We also run AIX, so there are guys
here with UNIX skills, but they haven't paid much attention to Linux, so
while they could get up to speed quickly, it wouldn't be seamless. We are
predominately a Windows shop however, so the rabid anti-MS might not be
fully comfortable. Telling MS jokes is permitted however. ;-)
I'm fairly new to Linux - about a year and a half since I started - so
there's a lot of things we could be doing that would be both fun and provide
a real service to our users that I just can't get to or often even know
about. One thing I've noticed when we've hired new people is that the job
usually gets molded to their strengths, rather than the other way around.
There's obviously things we need done, but there's still a lot of room for
institutional growth, where we (as a department) change rather than trying
to change the staff.
I'd encourage you (and others on the list with good, broad computer
experience as well) to apply. We don't charge for apps <g>, so the worst
that can happen is you don't get the job. Like the announcement says,
"Additional experience may be substituted for the required post-secondary
education on a year-for-year basis." I *know* you've been in this racket
more three years, so go ahead and put in an app.
Hope this helps clarify what we're (or at least me) looking for...
...Kevin
