[juneau-lug] Google Earth Linux

I tried the Google Earth version 4 download this morning.

The bin file installs quickly, and it handled my savage pro 8 video card well
enough - I don't have hardware acceleration, and GE complains.

However I can still pan and zoom fairly well, taking a peek at the picnic
table at the top of silverbow basin. Panning and zooming quickly takes up
100% CPU though. You'll have better performance with a supported video card.

If you run the installer as a normal user, the program installs in your home
directory. If you run it as root, it will do a global install, defaulting
to /usr/local/googleearth with a symlink for the executable
in /usr/local/bin. A firefox plugin is also installed, but Firefox complains
that there is no version information.

Pretty quick and lightweight install, and even with software OpenGL
performance is good enough.

Debian Etch, Linux Kernel 2.6.15, 2GB RAM, Athlon XP 2000+

Cheers,

James
