Subject: Juneau Linux User's Group Contact

Dear Sir/Mme:

I realize this will appear as a frivolous contact at first glance, but I
would like to assure you that I am quite serious in my intent. Please take
a moment to consider my query.

I am a former I/T Director at AT&T's WorldNet Service ISP line of business
in N.J. I took their "Early Retirement" incentive option back in June of
1998 and relocated to Florida's west coast. It seemed like the right thing
to do at the time, but the past five years has proven the decision making
process to have been somewhat flawed. Suffice it to say, I'm bored and
frustrated with the lifestyle and social aspects of being smack dab in the
midst of the nation's largest concentration of elderly over 70! I need to
make a change and inject some excitement back into my life and that of my
wife as well...

I've had this ever growing urge to investigate the potential of relocating
to S.E. Alaska. In as much as I'm about as far away from your world as is
possible while still residing in the U.S., it's somewhat problematic making
the initial contacts and associated plans and arrangements required to
pursue such an endeavor. This is where I hope to leverage the knowledge
base and society that comprises your organization.

I have to say right up front how absolutely surprised I was to discover the
existence of a Linux Users' Group in Juneau. My perspective and perception
of Juneau is such that I just couldn't imagine there being a sufficient
enough density of Linux-types to justify or support such an
organization. Obviously, I was incorrect. This is, I'm sure, just one
example of many misconceptions that most of us in the lower 48 have
regarding your world up there in the last frontier. From this realization
emanates the first query:

1) Where do the Linux (technical and administrative types) find employment
in Juneau? There is no obvious concentration of technically focused
businesses advertising for help in any of the local media. Thus, I hope
that a few of the members of the Juneau LUG will be able to answer the
question and, hopefully, can provide some pointers to contacts who might be
able to assist me in my search for employment in the Juneau area.

In this ongoing search to identify a potential means of generating an
income stream I've not limited
my sights to only technical venues. For example, I've had a rather
interesting series of recent email communications with the owner/manager of
Capital Chevrolet on Glacier Hwy. He had advertised for three new sales
people in the Juneau On-line Classifieds. He was quite open to
interviewing me for one of those positions, but I found it hard to justify
a rather expensive trip up to Juneau in the winter solely on the off-chance
that he might hire me. That, coupled with the usual concerns of a
long-distance relationship including an inability to determine an
individual's sincerity, resulted in my not rushing to the Alaska Airlines
counter and immediately purchasing tickets! So here comes the second query
related to this segment of the saga:

2) Is anyone in the Juneau LUG familiar with Ryan Carter? If so, what
sort of feedback can you provide me regarding Ryan both as a person and an
employer? Additionally, does anyone know any of the sales people at
Capital Chevrolet such that they can shed some light on the actual working
conditions and earnings potential at the dealership?

So, why do I think that I can get away with this sort of
imposition? Honestly, I'm hoping that the same spirit of cooperative,
community effort that has served as the basis and foundation for the
evolution of Linux over the years will extend to your dealings with me, a
potential new Juneau LUG member.

Yours very truly,
