[juneau-lug] Failure to recognize a DVD

Anybody know why my system will recognize CD's and not DVD's?
Distro Ubuntu 10.04
Dell 2.8 ghz
Mem 1 G
HP dvd1240i 24X Mutliformat DVD Writer
(box says it will write to DVD + or - / RW + or -)
Using SONY DVD+/RW discs 4.7 G
The player will begin to spin the disc at speed after a long delay, but no icon
on the desktop or the "Places" list of directories. Program cannot find either.
