Thanks Myron. You don't use Debian by any chance, do you? </kidding>

There is also daemon.log that had the errors that I was looking for, 
modprobe unable to load char-major-10-135. Did a quick google and found 
where in the kernel setup to turn that option on.

Is bitchx available via apt-get? I've tried all sorts of variations bx, 
bitch-x, bitchx, bX, etc.
