Hey Jason, thanks for the link. Been playing a bit with Main Actor.
Might look at KINO but I'm not sure if it can open .mpg files. It can
export them, but barfs when I try to open them. Haven't delved too
deeply into it yet though.

How's China treating you? Any first hand accounts on the state of Linux
there?

I googled around a bit and found this site:
   http://www.stillhq.com/jpeg2mpeg/

Turns out that all I needed to do was install mpeg2vidcodec and the
utilities in image-magick (already installed) took care of it. Found an
rpm on pbone.net so installed it and ran

   convert *.jpg glacier.mpg

and presto. Takes a couple minutes to process all the images. Guess
it's time to get an SMP Athlon 64 box! <g> (Santa, you listening?)

For a days worth of images I got about 5 seconds worth of video! Kind
of sucky images - even at the bright of day they're still pretty dark.
I expect in the summer it will be better, when the sun's higher in the sky.

Funny thing today - I don't know why but the Forest Circus put up one
image from June 29th. They post a new date stamped image every five
minutes. The difference in lighting was really apparent. I may go out
to the visitor's center and talk to them - be nice if they could adjust
the quality of the image a bit. I haven't played with webcams before,
so I don't know what the limitations are. Probably varies greatly with
the equipment.

Cron job is running just fine. Been grabbing images automatically for a
couple days now. It was a good excuse to actually learn a bit of
scripting. Easy to edit someone's premade script, but there's nothing
like writing one from scratch to enhance understanding.

To all the J-LUGgers out there, Merry Christmas and an Open Source New Year!

...Kevin
