Thanks for the offer, James, but I had already ordered the
cable made.  I thought I'd RTFM carefully, but I spent two
weks checking and rechecking all my configs on both machines. 
As soon as I plugged in the correct (crossover) cable the
boxen were online!

Oh, well, I guess it was a bit of a lesson in patience for my
son.

My printer is an LQ850 24-pin (parallel-port) with miniscule
memory so I guess I'd just better set up my Linux box as print
server/spooler.
