"Way back when" I had my home network connected to the internet via a dial-up modem. My firewall would regularly log all of the same attacks that a cable modem would see. The only difference is that I would lose connectivity when I hung up, and I rarely kept the same IP for more than a few hours. If you are downloading something and online for more than a few minutes, a random attack on your IP has a chance of succeeding. (The good news is that any attack on your IP will likely be a script kiddie - the real crackers probably wouldn't waste time on a dial-up IP that might go down any second.)
