Anti-static bags conduct electricity to a small degree.
Prolly have graphite or some other conductive material
embedded in the plastic.

If you rub some some types of plastic against wool, they'll
collect a static charge...and the anti-static bags won't.
I suppose one could always rub an anti-static bag mercilessly
against a sheep and defeat the anti-static mechanism....but you
get the idea.

If it's a stick of memory I put it in an anti-stastic bag.
If it's a graphics card I worry about it less but still use
a anti-static bag if I have one.

To tell ya the truth, I don't worry about static electricity
unless it's a day when walking across the carpet and
touching a door knob draws a spark.

I have several nics in regular old zip locks stored in
a regular plastic storage container on a shelf, the storage
container is nothing special....tupperware even.

Heck...I believe in the opposite approach.
Put a Van DeGraff static generator on the the end of the bench.
If it makes it through that then it'll make it through anything.

No matter how it's stored I always do the following:

Plug in the computer power cord but keep the power turned off.
(the computer chassis is now grounded through the ac cord, assuming
your building wiring is properly grounded.)
I touch the chassis, which discharges and static accumulation on my perso=
n.
Then I stay at the task at hand. Don't walk around and shuffle your feet =
on=20
the carpet. Don't walk across the room to answer the phone....etc.

I don't follow the rules always.
And I've never been bit by not following the rules to the letter.

But there's always a small chance and one day I'm sure I'll
have egg on my face.

If you're concerned...I bet you could buy a boatload of old
anti-static bags from any local computer shop for very very cheap.
