However, according to messaging vendor SpiritSoft it fails to deliver the necessary return on investment organisations need in today's business climate. Nigel Thomas, director of product management at SpiritSoft, said: "IBM's new WebSphere infrastructure software has the right strategy but the wrong implementation. IBM is right to focus on key standards such as Java and Web services, but its legacy technology still places the cost burden firmly at the feet of users. Instead, IBM should cut WebSphere down to size and allow people to use it to generate return on investment. Although entry level pricing for WebSphere Express is quite competitive, users can expect to pay through the nose for the full stack. "After all the hype of the past year there is a pressing need for pragmatic technology that delivers the benefits that Web services has been promising. However, while IBM is talking about extending the enterprise to encompass partners, suppliers and customers, WebSphere is like an iceberg. Above the waterline it addresses key Java and web services standards like J2EE and WSIF, but hidden under the surface is a huge 'legacy' of pieces it has accumulated - like CrossWorlds and the MQSeries family. These pieces predate the standards - sometimes by a decade or more, so they cannot be opened up to the outside world to take full advantage of improved Java and Web services productivity. "The problem with relying on these proprietary products is twofold - integration outside the organisation is more difficult and the user has a high cost product: it is not only expensive to buy, but expensive to own, with a large amount of proprietary knowledge required just to manage WebSphere. Business processes built using this approach - even when ostensibly based around standards like J2EE and Web services - are still non-portable, as behind the scenes they are locked into IBM's proprietary technology. SpiritSoft advocates a much more lightweight approach that is based entirely around open standards. The technology is cheaper to build, faster to market, and easier for users to tailor to fit their own requirements; so achieving rapid return on investment." About SpiritSoft SpiritSoft develops open-standard enterprise messaging-based technologies that enable dynamic business interactions across diverse applications and devices. SpiritSoft's open, standards-based approach leverages JavaT Message Service (JMS), XML and Caching technologies to enable users to seamlessly integrate with legacy systems and any proprietary middleware. The company provides the only complete integration platform that meets the challenges of building, deploying and managing distributed systems.
