My beef is controllers that want to handle traffic that is not in their zone, I don't mind being pinged if they pop up when I am in their zone and I don't notice, I was in an airway, but at 2000ft I should be below their floor.

You can legally fly from Lands End to John O'Groats if you remain outside
controlled airspace and you need talk to no-one. Remember (frightening
but true) over 50% of British registered aircraft have no radio

However, aren't we members of online flying communities because we WANT
to talk to someone? Otherwise you might as well pull the plug out of the
teephone socket and fly whereever the whim takes you! Heathrow in a
microlight - here I come! :-))
