I was using Firefox. In addition I was copying and pasting the images into
PSP and the distortion was still there. My suspicion is that the quality is
being degraded once the files are saved in PhotoShop..

Just a shot in the dark, but have you tried viewing in a different browser?
I've noticed that IE doesn't always show images "as-is".
