A quick check, V64 drivers for a new printer, which I am in the market for.

FSC supports V32/64.

Saitek is plug and play.

I must install as administrator.

It would be better checking the documentation for each program to see if
they support a 64 bit OS and whether they require different drivers. Better
to check in advance rather than find out the hard way with a stalled
installation.

Bones

That can only be assertained from trial and error.

I have the time, and I will not be putting my current machine to one side
just yet

Hopefully not too many errors.

You have it spot on. Vista 64 is a 64bit OS and programs have to be coded
for it. Whilst the majority of software can run on either OS the add-on
market is a bit different - programmers may not have the means to code in
64
bit.

The SBS software I run works in 32 or 64bit flavours of Vista - albeit
with
different drivers needed. Most of the add-on programs have been written by
the user base but none have released a 64 bit version. Gary is working on
one now for his ActiveDisplay program but it will be a separate download
from the 32 bit version.

I've no doubt FSX works in Vista 64. What you need to check is the rest of
the software you use - IVAN/IVAC, FSNav, FSC, all aircraft and scenery
programs with auto installers and so on. You also need to check that any
hardware you use has the necessary 64 bit drivers - GoFlight, TrackIR,
Saitek etc.

A couple of the chaps I fly with regularly have Vista 64 systems, and they
both seem to get more than the usual portion of mystery FSX crashes. They
are both the sort of chaps willing to try the latest toys, and so it might
just not be Vista 64 to blame.

I have been running with Vista 32 for some time now, I'm limited to 4 Gigs
of memory. I did have hang on boot problemsat first, but they disappeared
when I disabled the quick boot feature in my BIOS. No other problems
though.

I would recommend that if you do go the Vista 64 route you keep a diary of
changes you make to your system, and any FSX crashes, to see if you can
spot

what caused the problem. I suspect there's FSX add-ons out there that may
be

to blame, the problem is that they work for an hour or so, and then just
when you are sorting out your approach...........

Hi Fred

Don't want to make you jealous. But.

Intel Q9550
Coolmaster Hyper TX2 cooler
Nvidia 9800GTS overclocked
ASUS-P5ND MB
Coolmaster case black
Corsair XMS 8gig RAM
500gb fast drive, for FSX only should be more than enough. But will have
a
spare 200gb SATA available if needed.
700w supply
Creative extreme X-FI audio
Pinnacle dual tuner
Win Vista Premium 64

Just under a grand, from www.powerc.com, only 30 minutes drive from here.

The 24 inch widescreen from Pixmania. ACER P243W with VGA/DVI and HDMI
connections

TrackIR from www.rcsimulations.com

One more purchase to go, a wireless network printer to replace the aging
Epson 915 (cartridges are getting difficult to source)

And that will be it for a couple of years or more.

My current machine will handle all the mundain tasks.

In preparation for my new machine (due to collect tomorrow), I have
removed
GenX from my current install, which I will be keeping for test and
possible
online flying.

I had not realised, just how much it slowed down my current machine.

This hopefully will not affect my new machine, which will be primarily
for
FS.

I have also ditched FS9,as just very recently, it is not responding to
my
Saitek controls as it had, total uninstalls and reinstalls of FS9, has
not
got it back to as it was. A pity.

Also have tested out my new toys, TrackIR and a 24 inch LCD, like
wow!!!

Now the fun part, reinstalling everything on the new machine and
testing,
I
can stay online on the old machine fortuneatly
