Phew!! ... just completed my first flight on VATSIM - EGPF to EGBE (F70).

I would agree with Gerry that voice is much poorer than FPI. Not helped by the fact that the ATC I was getting was very rapid.

Not having ServInfo access to the VATSIM network immediately put me at a disadvantage since I had no idea where I might find ATC. Nothing active when I left EGPF, although one other a/c taxying for departure. As I progressed south, various ATC positions popped up (including EGNS_APP - Bones having a test??). I had contact with both EGBB_APP and EGBE_APP, and they were handling three or four other a/c using a combination of voice and text. Voice from one pilot was completely unintelligible.

Apart from having no idea of what was going on via ServInfo, I found the absence of TCAS a bit disconcerting. Also Unicom only available via text. And, although my network setup enabled me to have the main SB3 interface on my secondary PC, it does not appear possible to get the COM/transponder box on to the secondary PC. It's not in the way in the corner of the FS screen, but I found that the focus kept switching to it and I had to keep switching focus back to the FS window.

I'd certainly concur with Gerry's final comment - prefer FPI but with VATSIM's controller and traffic numbers.

On my system the sound is definitely not as good.
With the ATOC window, I could plonk it on a part of the Servinfo display that I don't need to see. The VATSIM windows won't allow the competition! If I try the same dodge then they sit, out of site, behind the Servinfo. Ditto with my displaced FSNav display. In theory the window can be reduced to just its banner heading. Then you can't see the ATC details.
The good news is over 800 participants, this morning. The bad is that when Servinfo does its reular updates the load causes FS9 to pause.


Not really a Luddite and I'll use VATSIM when that seems my best option, using FPI when it doesn't.
Overall, my ideal would be FPI but with VATSIM's numbers of controllers.

I played around with the ASRC software again last night and it really is pretty awful compared to the FPI radar screen. It starts off with a completely blank screen and you have to load the sector file for the area you want to control i.e. EGNS. When this loads you only see the data in this file - basically just the IOM zone - and you cannot look further away than this. There is no way, as we do in FPI, of talking an aircraft into one airport and then zooming in somewhere else miles away to vector an aircraft into another airport.
I loaded the EGNS sector file last night and the control zone pops up OK - but no runway centrelines! It took some delving around but the SCT format became familiar again and it needs a lot of work to bring it up to FPI standards.. Airfield layout is good though - not surprising because I recognise it instantly as my own work - the data being taken directly from some real airfields plans I made several years ago. <vbg>
All in all the FPI ATC software is still streets ahead.
