Mike, The Shoot The Messenger program at grc.com doesn't affect the Windows Messenger instant-messaging program which is similar to MSN Messenger. The "Shoot the Messenger" disables the Windows Messenger which is used in networks to broadcast messages to all network users, but has been subrogated by spammers. It is not the same as the Windows Messenger which the poster was questioning. To prevent Windows Messenger from running, see a detailed description in Microsoft Knowledge Base Q302089. Even if you disable Windows Messenger from the preferences as you did, other programs may use it such as Outlook, Outlook Express, etc. The removal instructions vary depending on which version of Windows Messenger you have, and whether you have Win XP Home Edition or Professional.
