Just right click on a contact and click on Edit Nickname or when you create a new contact one of the fields is Nickname.

It then shows that name in your contacts list, and basically everything, including in the message box shows there nickname.

I find nothing more annoying then when in a conversation when it says;
blah blah blah blah blah is typing a message and their name is really long. Very irritating!

Peter,

How do I give the people in my list nick names?

I've tried but can't find how to do it.

In WLM you can give people nicknames. This is what I've done so that JAWS doesn't say there full name including emotions etc. Once you give them a nick name, JAWS will announce this when they sign in instead of the longer name.

Hope that helps

I have this all the time with WLM 8.1 and JAWS 8.0.423 demo, and it
doesn't bother me, as I often read the contacts list anyway to see who's
online etc, however it's nice to know when someone's just signed in,
even though it truncates them sometimes.

Hi folks. I don't really know if this is a screenreader specific
thing. But A while ago, when I upgraded to the latest and
supposedly greatest version of Windows Live Messenger, one thing that
really began to annoy me is that when someone signed in with a
particularly long screen name, it got cut off. For example, if
someone's name said something like, Toonhead, can't wait for the next
harry potter book to come out! What happens is, it gets cut off, and
you hear, Toonhead, can't wait for the... has just signed in.

It didn't do this with older versions of WLM, so figuring that going
back to an older version might fix the problem, that's what I did.
But as you can probably guess, the problem still persists. Is this
happening with anyone else using Windows Live Messenger, and if so,
is there a setting that I can change so the entire screen name is
read when someone signs in? When I hit the keystroke to hear the last
person who signed in, the entire screen name is read out, but when
they sign in, it isn't. So if anyone has any kind of idea what to do
I would very very much appreciate it! I hate having to go to my
contact list every time someone I want to talk to signs in with a
different screen name just so I can tell what it is.

Thanks.
