I, too, started out in DOS and am glad I did, because of the background knowledge.

Hi,
I started out as a DOS user back in 1994, using the Artic BusinessVision screen reader for DOS, and Artic Winvision for Windows. When JFW came out I got a timed evaluation of version 1.21 and worked through the six cassettes. They helped a lot, considering that I was using Windows 3.1, which in hindsight, was a very clunky user interface. When Windows 95 came along it was like a breath of fresh air, a much more linear interface that was easy to navigate. But I digress. Fifteen years later, I can still say that the JAWS basic training materials are still very good, even for a novice computer user. I'm in charge of a training program out here in Los Angeles, and many of our blind clients are new to computers. I start them out with Marvelsoft's Talking Typing Teacher to get their keyboard skills started, then move them into the JAWS basic training material, along with some one-on-one training and guidance through the Windows environment and the fundamentals of nonvisual keyboard-based navigation. Moving on from there, we use some tutorials gathered from various sources, including the Surf's Up series found at the FS web site.

Back in 2002, I knew next to nothing about Windows, I was a die-hard Dos
user. I learned Windows and JAWS via Dan's basic training tapes, which
were fabulous.

I've never checked out the basic training material, but I gather it
assumes you are new to computers and Jaws.
