Hi, Gary. I understand about looking for the word update on the FS web site. Once you click on that, however, you then must find the link Enhancements in JAWS 11.0.1461 I have clicked on this link various times. Sometimes, it still leaves you with the page displaying what is new in jawxs11, and is not specific to the JAWS 11.0.1461 update until you refresh the screen with Insert+Escape. This is what might be confusing to a new user. Also, you can't assume that the person who wrote the question actually installed jaws on the computer. Many people get their computers from the Department of Rehabilitation with jaws already installed. I thought that was one of the functions of this list: To answer questions when a user is unsure where or how to get the information. Earlier, Adrian said that Dave told us where to go fishing, and how to get the information. He didn't. What he actually said was: "Go to the FS web site and read for yourself." This tells a person which web site to go to, but not even the URL for the web site, let alone which links to click on when the links are layered, and you first must click on one link, then look for another link on the next page which loads. Thank you. In the case of JAWS updates, the information about the new features and enhancements is pretty easy to find. If the Freedom Scientific web site is not bookmarked, just go to www.freedomscientific.com or www.hj.com (the old Henter-Joyce URL still works). Use Control+f to search for the word update. If there is only one instance of the word update on the page, press Enter on the link, otherwise repeat the search with F3. My JFW 11 then takes me directly to the Main Landmark on the Update page. If yours doesn't, use semicolon to navigate to it. You can also use semicolon or Shift+Semicolon to navigate to other landmarks on the page. You will see that these landmarks take you directly to the information you need. Reading down from the Main Landmark, you can also use the links to take you to the enhancements in the latest release or to the downloads section of the page. If these techniques are not familiar, it may be helpful to visit the Training page on the Freedom Scientific site and take the time to go through the Surf's Up Training pages. I'm not sure if landmarks are covered in Surf's Up or not since they are fairly new. Freedom Scientific has its faults, as we all know, but one thing I have always thought they do well is to provide good training for their products. If you don't know how to perform a task with JAWS, chances are that there is a training module, podcast or JAWS Help topic that will teach you how to do it. The FS website isn't as simple to navigate as it ought to be, one reason I appreciated you're going to the trouble of saving many of us from replicating what you did. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: jfw-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:jfw-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Bill White Sent: Sunday, July 04, 2010 9:40 AM To: jfw@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: Re: update for jaws Hi, Adrian. I saw the first post. I've also gone to the Freedom Scientific site many times. Until recently, I couldn't get the link to work that was supposed to give the enhancements only for the current release. Once I figured out that I had to click the link, then sometimes to refresh the screen, I was OK. But I've had many people tell me that it was difficult to find this link. First, he did tell the lister how to fish: go to the website whose address we all know by heart to get the answer, which is easy to find there. Perhaps in this case it might have been wiser not to post at all, but he was doing exactly what a good teacher often will do. The second point is that Dave has been one of the most informative contributors to the list for some time. He's taught a lot of us to fish. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: jfw-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:jfw-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Bill White Sent: Saturday, July 03, 2010 8:33 PM To: jfw@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: Re: update for jaws Yeah, Dave, but you didn't teach anyone to fish. You only told them to go fishing. There's a big difference between the two. Until you learn that, you'll never teach anyone to fish. Yes, the info is available on FS's site, but why some people find it necessary to reply to a request simply to say, "go get it yourself", is just plain rood! Why waste the time if they're not actually going to help? Maybe that response will be forthcoming when they ask for help. We'll see. All enhancements since the initial public beta release are included in this release. JAWS Resolved an issue where letters were lost when using Typing Mode with a Focus braille display. Resolved a customer reported issue where JAWS was announcing large negative values in combo boxes. JAWS no longer duplicates information that is typed into form edit fields. Resolved issues and improved performance with the Convert Currency and MLB Scores lookup sources in Research It. Word and Outlook Addressed an issue reported by The Lighthouse of Houston related to the spell checker not working as expected when using a third party add-in with Word. When in a table in a Word document, the INSERT+TAB keystroke correctly announces the cell content along with column and row title. The default setting for graphics detection in all versions of Word and Outlook 2007 or later is set to Labeled by default. This means that JAWS announces alt text (if available) and image dimensions. Resolved an issue where tutor messages were spoken before relevant information when using the ARROW Keys to read the next line or previous line in an Outlook 2010 e-mail message. This fix also resolves an issue where tutor messages were spoken with each press of an ARROW Key when moving through a message folder. JAWS no longer announces an unknown function call error when Outlook 2003 is configured to request a user name and password before launching. Lotus Notes Resolved two issues with Lotus Notes®. JAWS now announces labels for the date and time fields in a calendar entry. Also, the ALT+DOWN ARROW keystroke now opens the combo box for date and time fields. Resolved an issue with Lotus® Sametime® software where JAWS was not reading chat history when using the ARROW Keys. The Lotus Notes topic in the JAWS help file has been updated to include the latest application functionality and keystrokes. I hope this helps you, Laura. Have a wonderful day!
