Although laptops have many different key layouts and function keys, I have
found that the function key (usually at the bottom left of the keyboard)
plus the f5 key turn the monitor off. You might try this.

This is specific to each laptop; did yours come with any documentation, =
or, perhaps it's available on the manufacturers web site?

It used to be that my thinkpad had this option, but they recently =
dropped it during one of it's driver upgrades, so the best I can do is =
to control the dimness, and dim it down to almost nothing.

You can also set the power saving options so that the monitor turns off =
after only a couple of minutes of inactivity. Lastly, you can set it so =
that it does not go into suspend mode if you close the lid, then you =
could close the lid and use an external keyboard (hard to imagine where =
carrying around an external keyboard is really worth it I know).
