the ruler in Microsoft Word

Hello. A discussion has been going on the jfwlist regarding whether or not
the ruler should be enabled or disabled in the view menu of Word. The
consensus is that this feature serves no purpose for us despite some
adaptive technology tutorials which advise leaving it active. After the
discussion quieted, I was looking at Kathy Ann Murtha's tips for
configuring Word, and she still advises leaving the ruler visible. Of
course, she is covering both screen readers, and it could be that
Window-Eyes functionality requires a visible ruler whereas JFW does not.

We can conjecture about this all we want, but I'd like to come to a real
conclusion based on fact. Hence, my reason for including the scripts list
in the question. Can somebody analyze the Word scripts to see if the
presence of a visible ruler is required? In general, is there a dependable
way to get the answer to this sort of question from somebody with
definitive knowledge?

Dean
