Now, I can't read what I've written in an e-mail, nor can I read existing
e-mails with the PC cursor any more.
How can I go in and delete my thunderbird configuration, and start over
again?

In that case, from thunderbird, pres ins plus 6, then alt plus s and
under text processing you should find the Detect language.
