Hi Chip;

Eloquence hardly takes up anything, as do the other formant synths. The
problem with things like AT&T Natural Voices, Dolphin's Orpheus 2, and other
synths from the same stable, is that they're concatonated synths. They
stictch together actual human sampled speech to form words. So, these
concatonated synths take up similar resources to pretty much continually
playing a wave file, plus, I imagine the sample database is loaded into
memory. To cut down on the amount of memory being used, they may have
compressed the wave data using something like Huffman encoding, which will
end up with something similar to MPEG files. The trade-off here, is that
compression requires decompression, and decompression requires CPU activity.

So, formant synths are pretty harmless in terms of resource usage, but
concatonated synths can be pretty resource intensive, although they do sound
a bit better *smile*.
