MessageBonnie,

I think that if you turn off the "track virtual cursor" and display web pages
in "page layout" mode, and silence JAWS, it should be less intrusive to sighted
helpers. However as soon as they click on a different window, speech would come
back if just silenced dynamically. Of course silence is also possible by
plugging in a headset and sticking it in a drawer, which I've done at times.

But better is to unload JAWS completely for the time that they are working with
it.

The very best would be to have a dual boot on your PC, one that has the web and
display set up for JAWS, and the other with all the default setup. But that is
more for computers where more than one user is spending shared time on it.

The situation I run into more often is wanting JAWS to go away temporarily
while my family helps me with something that isn't working. They can't get into
edit boxes, or navigate as they are used to even if the speech in turned down.
Of course, there is always the option of turning JAWS off completely, and then
back on when I need it again. I was just wondering if there is any other
option. I don't suppose that sleep mode makes it possible for a sighted person
to use the computer as they are used to?

  Thanks, Bonnie

Jim, here are copies of replies to this question concerning an earlier
version of JAWS that I kept for future reference. See if they apply to JAWS 11.

    sleep mode instructions

Query. Have Jaws 9 and need to put Jaws a sleep for an audio game I'm
playing but I did this ages ago and cannot remember the instructions to do so,
can anyone here help me please?

Tom Lang, the permanent method. 1. Start the audio game. 2. Press insert
plus the 6 key on the number row, not the numeric pad. This takes you straight
into configuration manager. 3. JAWS may want to create a new configuration file
whose name corresponds to that of the audio game's executable. Go ahead and do
that. 4. Press alt+s to open the Set Options menu. 5. Open Advanced Options. 6.
The first thing you'll land on is a checkbox called "enable sleep mode". Check
that by pressing the space bar, then press enter. 7. Press ctrl+s to save the
configuration file, then press alt+f4 to exit configuration manager. No more
double-speech. JAWS should go into sleep mode every time you start the game.

Dave Durber, the temporary method. Press INSERT+CTRL+S to open the "Select
a Synthesizer" dialog. Press the letter "N" to select the "No Speech
Synthesizer". Press ENTER to accept your choice and close the dialog. You can
now play your game without JAWS speaking. When you want to have JAWS speak
again, Press INSERT+CTRL+S to open the "select a Synthesizer" dialog. Press the
Letter "E" to select Eloquence, if that is the synthesizer you want to use.
Press ENTER to accept your choice and close the dialog. After a few seconds you
will hear JAWS speak again.
