I did some snooping around with directory and registry monitors, and the system tray setting can be found in the current user's settings in default.jcf file. Open the file with a text editor, and look under options. It should be at the top of the file. Depending on whether you have JAWS running from the system tray, you'll see a line that looks like the following.


This means that JAWS is not running from the system tray. If you are running JAWS from the system tray, it will be either ViewMode=1 or the line will not be there altogether.
