John,
Sorry for misunderstanding your frustrations. Please do not leave without
hearing me once more:
It is not your fault. It is not FS's fault either. It is the firewall that
is causing this problem. The fact that you cannot reactivate your copy of
JAWS is not FS's issue, however, you'll need to keep this in mind:
sometimes, it is the problem with network connectivity that is causing this
problem in the first place. In this case, a firewall is blocking the port
where auth.exe is supposed to use. If you receive continuous error messages,
then it is something to do with network connectivity. Since you said that
you are working for a university, you might consider talking to the admin
there to have them open the port temporarily until you tell them otherwise.
